Examination: Closed book. No outlines, class notes or other materials may be brought into the examination. Last year I gave an extra 30 minutes to complete the exam (i.e., a total of 2.5 hours). I may do this again this year, if I deem it necessary or appropriate. A copy of an examination used in a previous year is attached. This year's examination will be similar in format to the attached.
Grade: The examination counts 100% of your grade, except that I will keep track of the quality and quantity of classroom participation (which may include minor written work or oral presentations), and if you distinguish yourself, I may "bump" you up or down as much as a one-half letter-grade adjustment).
Attendance: Attendance and participation in class discussions are required. If you fail to attend class regularly and demonstrate a reasonable level of preparation, I reserve the right to exclude you from the final examination. I will not do so, however, without giving you at least one warning.
Course Materials: We will rely heavily on the casebook, Paul C. Weiler & Gary R. Roberts, Cases, Materials and Problems on Sports and the Law (3d ed. 2004) (the "casebook") and the materials in Fall 2007 Sports Law Materials. You may, but are not required to, purchase the accompanying Documentary and Statutory Supplement. Other important materials may be provided before and during the semester. Also, an optional-reading source, Gary A. Uberstine, Law of Professional and Amateur Sports (2004) ("Uberstine"), is on reserve at the Underwood Law Library. Gary Roberts, co-author of the casebook regularly does a lengthy "Sports Law Developments," the most current of which (only through last year) is in Fall 2007 Sports Law Materials.
This course requires a lot of reading for a two-hour course (according to past student evaluations), and even more optional reading will be suggested from time to time. It is likely that the more you read, the better you will perform on the examination and the better your class participation will be. You will also get more out of the course!
